FALL/WINTER Holt-Sunny Ridge GROUPS

 

These groups are ongoing and participants are encouraged to attend all sessions, but can register for individual dates. A minimum of five youth are needed for each month in order to run the group for that particular date. We hope to see you there!

 

NEW! KIDS Connection Group (Co-Ed), ages 8-12 or 3rd-6th grade:

Meets once a month on the following Tuesdays from 6pm-7pm. To sign up please click on the following dates to register!

This group's focus is on providing a safe environment for connection and social interaction. 

 

Goals of the group are to help adopted youth learn and practice how to problem solve as well as improve their communication skills. Group is based on TBRI ® principles (Trust Based Relational Intervention ® by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross).

 

A concurrent parent/caregiver group will be offered for both Kids Connection and Teen Girls Group.

$25 per youth

$20 per adult for parent group

Maximum youth: 12

Minimum youth required: 5

TEEN GIRLS Group (ages 13-16):

Meets once a month on the following Tuesdays from 7:15-8:15pm.

This group is focused on providing a safe environment to share, support and discuss issues that your adopted daughter might be struggling with such as relationships, anxiety, school, family, friends or adoption. Group is based on TBRI ® principles (Trust Based Relational Intervention ® by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross). 

 

A concurrent parent/caregiver group will be offered for both Kids Connection and Teen Girls Group.

Join us for an 8-week parenting course with other adoptive parents as we explore new ways to break through to our adopted children, despite their past experiences of fear, neglect, and trauma.

Parenting Classes for Adoptive & Foster Parents

Parenting The Theraplay Way: Attachment-Based Therapeutic Parenting for Your Adopted/Foster Child Saturday, October 13, 2012 9:00am to 5:00pm Sunny Ridge Family Center, Bolingbrook Sunny Ridge is pleased to welcome The Theraplay Institute, an organization that has been helping parents build better relationships with their children for over 40 years. They understand that adopted and foster children often need a different kind of parenting, and that these parenting skills may not just come naturally to even the best parent. Their experts understand the neurological and developmental issues that might be challenging your child, and they will give you specific ideas and techniques to help you bring joy, fun, and laughter back home to your family. The Theraplay Institute will share what you need to know about attachment and trauma, and how parenting “The Theraplay Way” will address your child’s challenges. You will see the activities being used with other families, and you will practice some of them to give you confidence to try them at home. This program is also appropriate for pre-adoptive parents as well as for extended family members such as grandparents, and aunts and uncles. The workshop will address such issues as: How to help your child feel more comfortable accepting your guidance and leadership. How to nip negative behaviors in the bud without being punitive. How to get away from constant rewards and threats of consequence. How to discipline your child in a way that is effective and fosters learning rather seeming to make the child feel ashamed and vengeful. How to integrate playful, reciprocal interactions that will enhance your child’s sense of well-being and self-esteem. How to foster a feeling of connection and joy between you and your child that will last beyond the time of the actual activity/event. Creative Arts Series for Adopted Tweens (Ages 10-13)

Tuesdays, July 10, 17, & 24, 2012, 6:30pm-8:00pm

Is your Tween looking for a creative and fun activity this summer while connecting with others? Sunny Ridge presents a Creative Arts Series for children ages 10 to 13. Choose from either the Drawing or Creative Writing track; attend three (3) Tuesday evening sessions. The Drawing track allows your child the opportunity to explore the basics of drawing cartoons, characters, storybook sketches or anime. The Creative Writing track will introduce your child to different types of writing, such as fiction, journaling and poetry -- using word games, storytelling and free writing to creatively write a short story. 

 

Creative Arts Series fee: $60 per person for 3 sessions; two or more family members: $50 per person
Choose either Drawing or Creative Writing track when registering.

Limit: 10 children per track

Empowering Your Kids to Become Problem Solvers

This Positive Parenting session’s topic: Empowering Your Kids to Become Problem Solvers taught by Beth Racine - Relational Consultant.

Do you find yourself fixing or solving your child's problems more than you would like to be? Do your kids frequently state "It's too hard!"? Learn tools about how you can empower your kids to be able to think through challenges and successfully problem solve solutions without always needing outside help.
How will the evening work?Your family can start your Monday night with a meal from Harvest Food Court. Harvest is open from 5:30-6.45pm and offers a special selection of adult meals for $4.00 and kids' meals for $2.50. It's a meal deal!

After your meal you would check your child(ren) into their assigned Oasis room.

Our Monday night children's program, Oasis, is a fun, safe environment for infants through grade 5 kids. Oasis requires separate registration.
The Positive Parenting teaching begins at 7pm. Each teaching topic is followed by table discussions that will help you process the content according to your current family situation.
