We are Tullio and Kelly Cox and we are fundraising to bring home Baby Cox.

Kelly's desire to adopt from China began in 2011 when she served at a foster home for children with special needs. She recently returned for the fourth time where she met a little girl in need of heart surgery. After just seeing pictures of her, Tullio instantly felt the need to bring her home and give her the care she needs.We are now in the process of trying to adopt her. 

 

We've completed our application, parent training and home study and sent in all of our Dossier documents (we are just waiting for our 1800A approval). WUHAN, China — A woman in her mid-40s cradled a scrap of blue cloth checkered with red. “Have you seen this before?” she asked. “Do you recognize this pattern?” I held it up to the light and noticed the cotton edges had frayed and tattered over the years. “We already had three girls,” she explained. “We needed a boy. We were too poor. I saved up money for the cloth, and I spent a month hand-sewing you a little baby suit and matching hat. After 50 days, I abandoned you by a bridge.” But she used the Chinese word for “lost” instead of “abandoned.” “I dressed you in the new clothes for good luck. I kept this scrap for 20 years to remember you. My little baby, you must have seen this cloth before! You must have the matching clothes?” No, I shook my head. I had never seen it. Her face fell and she began to sob.

This was the summer of 2012, in the oppressively humid, industrial city of Wuhan, China. I grew up in Massachusetts and had returned to Wuhan with my adoptive mother in search of my birth parents. I felt I owed it to my birth family to try to locate them; but most of all, I owed it to myself. I never expected that the search would attract an outpouring of media attention; bring forward dozens of families, all claiming that I was their lost daughter; and uncover a nationwide pain, forged over decades, with which the country is still reckoning.

Help Send Chinese Orphans to School

September, 2015  It's back to school time. Can you help?     Our education program serves 65 children from various orphanages in Jiangxi province in China. We have some very bright young adults whom we've helped get through college or vocational training programs, and are now launched successfully into the work force, and we're very proud of them.  What a change this is from years past when they would just languish in the Welfare Institute as adults.  And we have some more orphans now ready for the same advanced training and education. We also support many disabled children who really need the stimulation, patient teaching, and steady rehab training only a special education facility offers. Those facilities are few and far between in China; it's very exciting that we've located some for children that didn't previously have access to one, especially in Shangrao and Yichun. Naturally, that kind of intense, specialized training comes at a price. We're seeking donations to be able to send these children to a school that gives them their best chance at fulfilling their potential. So far we know that at least 15 kids will need full or partial scholarships for the school year starting now.  For a listing of children, more information and to sponsor a student, click HERE.

CCAI is proud to announce our 2015 Winter China Hosting Program!  Please consider giving the gift of family and make a difference in an orphan's life for 3 to 4 weeks this holiday season.  

Families choose to host for a variety of reasons.  All families want to share the gift of holiday with an orphan; some families ultimately want to adopt the child they host; other families host a child to advocate for their adoption. Whatever your reason is for hosting, please know that you are impacting the life of a child in more ways than you will ever know!  

As the result of hosting, 86% of older children that were hosted through CCAI’s China Hosting Program over the past year have found their forever families.  These children may never have been adopted or even had the opportunity to be adopted if it were not for the hosting program.

Jenny Bowen, a former screenwriter and filmmaker, is the founder and CEO of Half the Sky Foundation, an organization dedicated to reimagining care for orphaned Chinese children. Bowen received the American Chamber of Commerce's Women of Influence Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2007 and the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship in 2008.

 
In the summer of 1998, Jenny Bowen looked out her kitchen window onto her garden, and her life changed forever. Her three-year-old daughter Maya, whom she and her husband had adopted months earlier from an orphanage in China, had transformed from a vacant-eyed, sickly little girl into a joyous being thriving in an environment where she knew she was loved. Watching her daughter play, Bowen was overcome with the desire to help the orphaned children she couldn't bring home. And that's when Half the Sky Foundation was born.

Wish You Happy Forever tells the story of China's momentous progress in its treatment of orphaned and abandoned children. When Bowen began Half the Sky in 1998 determined to bring a caring adult into the life of every orphaned child, it seemed impossible that China would allow a foreigner to work inside government orphanages, let alone try to bring meaningful change. Inevitably, the pathway to collaboration was fraught with challenges: Bowen had to find ways to lead her organization past closed doors and naysayers, bureaucratic roadblocks and reluctant government officials, as well as natural disasters and flustered board members to realize her vision for a loving, more nurturing approach to child welfare in China. But despite the oceans and ideas that divide us, in the end, all of us want only good for our children. Now the Chinese government not only trusts but partners with Half the Sky to make life better for the children in its care.

To this day, Bowen is the only Westerner working with the Chinese government to transform its entire child welfare system from the inside, and Half the Sky, with fifty-two children's centers throughout the country, has helped more than a hundred thousand children. Bowen's beautifully written memoir, Wish You Happy Forever, teaches us that saving a child's life can transcend language and cultural barriers, and that, above all else, a determined dreamer with a loving presence speaks at the greatest volume.

Consider "Special Needs" Adoption from China

If so, you should know more about the China Waiting Child Adoption Program at Sunny Ridge Family Center. Sunny Ridge has the privilege of finding families for children from China with varying degrees of special medical needs. See more in this video. The Term "Special Needs" Most people believe that when they adopt a child with "special needs" they will have no control over the types of medical issues a child may have. The truth is, families decide the types of "special needs" they are comfortable in handling. Also, in the case of this program, the term "special needs" is used to define a wide variety of of medical needs, including very minor, correctable medical needs to more involved needs. Some children are available for adoption through the program simply because of their age! Children range in age from one year of age to 13 years old, with healthy children over the age of eight also available. Both boys and girls are in need of a family. Why Are Children Available? Children are in need of a family for a variety of reasons. Some are available because of the social stigma of having a physical disability and the lack of affordable health care treatments. Often more boys are available in the China Waiting Child Adoption Program due to China’s belief that more families would want to adopt boys, leading to more boys being made available. However, adoptive families in the United States tend to have a preference for girls. This means that little boys in this program can often wait twice as long for a family. Want To Learn More? The Fox Valley Adoption Group in Illinois is promoting/hosting a new movie called Somewhere Between.
