State Trends in Child Well-Being

The 2017 KIDS COUNT Data Book urges policymakers not to back away from targeted investments that help U.S. children become healthier, more likely to complete high school and better positioned to contribute to the nation’s economy as adults. The Data Book also shows the child poverty rate in 2015 continued to drop, landing at 21%. In addition, children experienced gains in reading proficiency and a significant increase in the number of kids with health insurance. However, the data indicate that unacceptable levels of children living in poverty and in high-poverty neighborhoods persist. Get all the state-by-state data HERE.

The 2014 KIDS COUNT Data Book

The KIDS COUNT Data Book is an annual publication that assesses child well-being nationally and across the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Using an index of 16 indicators, the 2014 report ranks states on overall child well-being and in four domains: (1) economic well-being, (2) education, (3) health, and (4) family and community. For 2014, the three highest-ranked states for child well-being were Massachusetts, Vermont and Iowa; the three lowest-ranked were Nevada, New Mexico and Mississippi. The report also provides national trends, comparing the latest data with mid-decade statistics.

The 2014 Data Book is the 25th edition of the Casey Foundation's signature publication. As such, the report also examines trends in child well-being since 1990, the year of the first report. It highlights positive policies and practices that have improved child health and development and features stories from several states on advocacy efforts that have improved outcomes for kids and families.

Waiting Families Group: Families in the process of adopting meet every 3rd Sunday of the month after the 11:15 service (about 12:30) in the Link, (the breezeway connecting the atrium to the Care Center) for connection, support, & encouragement. First Mom Group: Women who have placed a child for adoption are invited to meet together for community, encouragement, support, & healing. no matter where you are on your journey. The group meets on Wednesday nights from 7:30-8:45. For more information contact Jan Collins (a fellow birthmother) at 773-983-3773.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Family Friend (Safe Families): Provide parent or child mentoring, babysitting, transportation, or other supportive services to families. Background check required.

Resource Friend (Safe Families): Provide assistance to host families by offering good & services or professional skills to serve children who are placed in Safe Families.

Prayer Team: Provide ongoing prayer support for family and ministry needs.
